Longleaf Elementary has been named a Participating School by the MAC (Mississippi Arts Commission). We have many professional development opportunities for our teachers to attend. We will be integrating arts in our classroom and throughout the school to allow our students to deepen their knowledge and learning experiences.

Gingerbread Week

Run, run as fast as you can. You can't catch me. I'm the gingerbread man!

Gingerbread Week is an Oak Grove tradition! Oak Grove kindergartners have been participating in this special tradition for many years! We have continued the tradition at Longleaf!

The purpose of Gingerbread Week is to introduce kindergarten students to school in a fun and exciting way! Throughout the week we read different versions of the book, The Gingerbread Man. The students compare and analyze these stories. Then…they participate in gingerbread-themed language arts, math, and art projects. At the end of the week, the students work together to create a giant gingerbread man! The gingerbread man runs away (gasp) just like in the stories! While searching the school for the missing cookie, the kids learn the locations of the office, library, cafeteria, playground, and gym. They finally find the gingerbread man in the classroom, and they eat him! 

It was a fun week for all involved...except for the gingerbread man. ;-) 




We tasted a gingerbread cookie and graphed the part we ate first.

This happens every year! We always like heads the most!

We made gingerbread houses using construction paper and stickers. 

Aren't they sweet! 

We used play dough to make gingerbread men!

He's almost good enough to eat! Almost…. 

We did a science experiment with a gingerbread man! We put him in a bowl of water!
These were our questions: What will happen to him if he gets wet? In the story, why didn't he swim across the river?
Why did he need the fox's help? 

We even made real gingerbread houses! 


Sweet!

 We made our very own gingerbread man!!!

We made the dough flat.

We shaped him.

We decorated him.

We imagined how yummy he would taste.

Isn't he beautiful!


We put him in the oven to bake.


But…HE RAN AWAY!
We made wanted posters so people would know what he looked like.

The wanted posters didn't work so we searched the school! Shhhh…. he's very sneaky! 

We found clues that told us where to go!

They were everywhere!

We found him in the classroom!


Wow!

Oh my! He gained some weight! 


We ate him!!!

Hahahaha! 
We ate everything except his feet! No one wants to eat dirty feet! Yuck! 



He ran and he ran as fast as he could. But those kindergartners caught him! We knew that they would!
