Longleaf Elementary has been named a Participating School by the MAC (Mississippi Arts Commission). We have many professional development opportunities for our teachers to attend. We will be integrating arts in our classroom and throughout the school to allow our students to deepen their knowledge and learning experiences.

Japanese Cherry Blossoms

Our wonderful art specialist, Ms. Moore, is always using creative techniques with her students! I especially love the way she used paint and straws to create these Japanese cherry blossoms! The kindergarten students started the project by blowing black paint with a straw. Then they painted pink flowers with q-tips! The finished product is fabulous, and the students had so much fun making these beautiful paintings!

Fairy Tales

Longleaf second grade students had lots of fun participating in a fairy tales project! First, they read several fairy tales. Then they compared and contrasted the different versions of Cinderella. The students learned the components of a fairy tale, and then wrote their own fairy tale. They presented the fairy tale with props they made. I love how these teachers combined drama, visual arts, and writing!

Do you want fries with that?

Mrs. Timidaiski is Longleaf's very own music specialist! Our wonderful music teacher is always trying new and creative ideas to give her students a love of music! This week Mrs. Timidaiski's students are working on composition with partners using quarter, eighth, and sixteenth note rhythms. They are building rhythm burgers with the top bun and the bottom bun being the same and the meat being different. When they finished, they performed their compositions for the class!

House of ING

Mrs. Williamson's 4th grade students had lots of fun reviewing math skills at House of ING, a Chinese restaurant! I love the way Mrs. Williamson combined drama and math!
"Math is way more fun in socks and with chopsticks."

Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo!

First grade teachers used narrative writing and collage art in a magical way! The children wrote about what they would do if they were fairy godmothers or fairy godfathers! Then they created art inspired by these magical fairy tale characters!
